Breaking-Fast at Middletown Pancake House!
Posted by finechina on September 10, 2007

1610 Highway 35
Middletown, NJ
(732) 671-1145
I normally don’t take trips out to central jersey, but this time was special. I was visiting my friend Victoria out in Middletown, where upon for breakfast she takes me to this local joint. As I looked out from the car as we were pulling into the parking lot, I can’t help but wondered if this place is better or worse than IHOP. Hm…on one hand I think IHOP is totally overrated, but I totally love it. But whatever. I placed full faith into Victoria’s hands and dived right in to this gorgeous pink and white house. Not like I had a choice anyways! I’m starving as always.
Walking into the restaurant, I felt this awkward presence — I thought I was in the south, somewhere like Texas. The people here is mostly older caucasians with families. I do see a lot of interracial couples, mainly asian women with caucasian males, and their mixed babies. The babies are cutest. Just not when they’re screaming and crying all over the joint. That shiet that drives me the hell nuts. But yeah, expect middletown to be something like middle america, except here in Jersey, everyone is very very nice. The hostess is oh so sweet and guided us to our table and immediately asked what drinks we wanted. Being hungry and thirsty as hell as I am, I ordered a coke and lentil soup, while the sidekick called for just plain tap agua.
Speaking of breakin’ fast, low and behold drinks arrived as well as my lentil soup.
It comes with oyster crackers so that’s always good. The utensils looks like they’ve been there forever due to the dullness in their silverware and the rusty look on their plates. I love the combination between tomatoes, celery, lentils, and not to mention my small round crackers in this soup. All the blend of these ingredients gave the soup the extra added punch that it needed. This soup is exactly what I wanted to taste, without the mumble jumbo.
My rating: 4/5
Next came Victoria’s breakfast plate:

Canadian bacon, pancakes, and sunny-side up eggs.
What can I say? This looks fabulous. I had a little taste of the pancake since the girl was going to chop my hands off with her knife and fork, and let me tell you know fluffy and rich the pancake was. This is just the way I love it. And since miss Vicky finished it up, I figure this is a very good meal since she’s a real picky eater. Your judge for yourself.
Next came my ultimate feast:

Belgian waffles with strawberries and confectioner sugar on top w/side of apple sauce, bacon, cream, and hash browns.
You cannot believe the orgiastic pleasure my mouth felt when I was eating this. This dish right here had the perfect marriage of salt and sugar. The belgian waffle is soft and fluffy with a nice crispy edge. When you dip it in their sweet apple sauce, you can feel the party happening in your mouth. And what can I say about the hash brown and bacon besides the fact that they’re really good?
My Rating: 5/5
When you happen to be in middletown, please drop by the pancake house and try their insane waffles and pancakes. They also serve lunch like salads, wraps, sandwiches, etc etc. There’s a wide array of choices for you to choose so that you’ll be 100% satisfied. I really loved this place and I’m glad Vicky brought me here.

Brooklyn’s Best Kept Secret: Iron Chef House – Japanese Cuisine
Posted by finechina on August 26, 2007
Iron Chef House
92 Clark St
(near Henry St, and Pace University’s St George Dorm)
(718) 858-8517

If you think the best Japanese restaurants are in Manhattan, think again. There are exceptions with such restaurants as ‘Masa’, ‘Morimoto’, or ‘Sugiyama’ where they offer top notch sushi for the highest dollar. BUT, if you’re looking for delicious sushi at an unbeatable price, come to Brooklyn. That’s right Brooklyn. Under the brooklyn bridge, there’s an up and coming neighborhood, aka Brooklyn Heights, which is becoming a highly attractive and trendy place.
The reason why I came here was because my mother had come to this place before and she’s an avid sushi lover. She insisted that I had to come here because she believes it is the best sushi that she has ever tasted in Brooklyn, but I have my doubts coming from a woman who’s content with any kind of food, including my home cooking. Haha. She knew some people who worked there and had hookups to a table there on a busy friday night for me, my brother, bf, and of course her. When we finally made it there, I noticed how small it was. It was like the size of a studio, but it looked cozy as hell. All the sushi chefs huddled in the back putting their skills to the test, while we sat right in front of them. Yes that’s how small it is. So expect to wait when you get there even if you make a reservation.
I’m really glad that this place has Japanese sushi chefs making my sushi. I have to admit, I have been to sushi places that has been prepared by non-Japanese chefs and they always lack something. Sometimes I don’t need to see who’s making it and can tell just by looking at the sushi. Like sometimes my sushi rolls aren’t decorative or the chef skimps out on ingredients like rice, fish, or avocado, or they don’t use fresh ingredients. I really hate that. Also, instead of using crab meat, they use fake crab meat which I really don’t like, but apparently it’s acceptable in NYC. Try going to LA’s Japan town. I guarantee they don’t use that fake sheit.
Now check this out:
On your right you have your Monkey Roll, which has shrimp tempura, avocado on top and inside, crab meat and topped off with several different kinds of spicy sauce with sesame. If you’re not a fan of raw sushi, this is the roll for you. The marriage between the soft and creamy avocado with the crunchy shrimp tempura really creates the perfect balance in your mouth. I have never had such a roll before and I am definitely glad that I’ve tasted something so incredible. Excellent.
This house special roll is only $9.95. Look how much they’re giving you!! You really can’t beat that.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
My Rating: 5/5
The other one is the Spicy Yellow Dragon Roll. In it contains tuna, salmon, yellow tail, crab meat, mixed veggies topped with fish flakes, sesame, and a spice sauce. Now I’m not a fan of raw food, but luckily the waitress had it half cooked so it maintained the seafood freshness and it was easy to eat because it’s not as slimy which I loved. I have to admit, this was the best dragon roll I ever had. This roll had a hint of spiciness and it went well with the whole array of textures — smooth, soft, and crunchy.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
My Rating: 5/5
The next dish the waitress served to us is the Tuna Tataki. This is half seared tuna topped with sesame, sliced seaweed, and topped with the chef’s special sauce.
Price: $7.50

With a good piece of seafood, you are never supposed to taste the “fishy-ness.” This very moist half pan-seared tuna taste smooth and succulent. As a first time having tuna like this, I am actually very impressed with this dish.

My Rating: 5/5
Grilled Rice Ball
Price $4.50

Look how artistically done this rice ball is. The rice is moist, unlike most riceballs, and it is drizzled with soy sauce. The inside of this contains dried shredded pork with the chef’s special sauce to make it moist. You’d be surprised at how one can really fill you up.

My Rating: 5/5
Green Seaweed Salad
Price: $4.50
This by far is the best seaweed salad I have ever have. I’m serious. Usually with most seaweed salads you’ll have seaweed that looks like it’s fished right out of the ocean and right onto your plate. Here they cut it into thin slices, mix it in with some thin clear rice noodles, and toss it with some salt, sesame oil, and sesame seeds. I am quite impressed by this dish and would definitely reorder this when I come back.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
My Rating: 5/5
Grilled Spicy Crispy Salmon Salad with spinach, sliced carrots caviar, and spicy wine sauce.
Price: $7.00

This is an impressive looking salad, but I personally didn’t like it only because I don’t like seafood in my salad. But the Salmon is very fresh and flavorful and I would recommend this to those who likes salmon and salad.
My rating: 4/5
Seafood Sauteed Lo Mein Noodles
Price: $14.00

The sauteed lo mein noodles remains very moist and flavorful. With the mix of the sesame seeds and the fish, it’s a delectable delight. I usually never have seafood with lo mein noodles, but surprisingly this is very good to eat. Not bad.
Recommended.
My Rating: 4/5
Grilled Chilean Sea Bass!
Price: $16.00

This has got to be the best sea bass I have ever tasted in my whole entire life. The presentation of the dish is actually the reflection of how delicious it is. The sea bass is seasoned very well with ground pepper, salt, sesame seeds, and parsley bits, and it is grilled to perfection. Words itself cannot describe how incredible this dish is.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
My Rating: 5/5
Last but not least,
FRIED ICE CREAM!
(Red bean, vanilla, green tea)
Price: $3.75

Fried ice cream can never go wrong. Of course sometimes chefs might add a little too much flour, but this isn’t the case with this one. After a long hearty meal here, the best way to end the night is with a big cup of fried ice cream. My part had the vanilla and the red bean. We finished every last drop.
I really recommend this place because the price is right and the food is very authentic and flavorful. When you’re in the neighborhood, drop on by and try it out!

Cheap Authentic Vietnamese Food for the Hungry: Nha Trang One
Posted by finechina on August 8, 2007
Nha Trang One
87 Baxter St (near Canal St)
New York, NY
(212) 233-5948

Of the three Vietnamese restaurants on this block, I think this by far is the better tasting one.
When I came here with my boyfriend and his friends, we were really reluctant to come here, but his friends reassured us that this is the place to be. And inside, the decor of the restaurant looked pretty plain, plus there were a lot of tourists in there which pretty much is a turn off for me. I usually avoid this restaurant because of the tourists the reason being that I think touristy food = junk/fast food. Plus the decor in the other two restaurants looks better than this one, but I’ll soon learn that image isn’t always everything.
Beef cube with Rice
$5.75
This beef cube is the very tender and oh so juicy, unlike the other Vietnamese restaurants in Chinatown. Usually the beef would be rolled up and then grilled ’til charred. I really hate that. But the way they make it here is right on the money and it’s cut into small piece, which I really enjoy.
My rating: 4.5/5
Highly Recommended!
Next came the Grilled pork chop w/tomatoes and cucumbers over rice.
$5.75
Pretty soon, you’ll see the same consistency with the way their meats are cooked. This lovely young pork chop is tender, juicy, and oh so succulent, and not at all dried as you will see in the other vietnamese restaurants due to over grilling. It would be nice if there’s a little more sauce with this dish, but it’s still pretty good. For the price, you really can’t go wrong.

My Rating: 4/5
Steak w/Fried Rice
$6.50

I really can’t give much credit to this dish, I can’t. The downfall of this dish is the fried rice. It is probably the blandest fried rice I have ever have, and it does not look fried at all. Not to say that it is a failure, but I’m saying that it’s pretty much some soy sauce and probably subtle hints of oyster sauce. Honestly, I think they would make it with and least some green peas and carrots and maybe, just maybe some pineapple. But hey, at least the steak was not disappointing. It wasn’t the greatest, but it was tender and juicy. I did needed more salt for this.

House Special Rice Noodles in soup with beef brisket, tendon, eye round and omoza
$5.50

Having a good soup really sets the mood for this bowl. When you have a really pretty brown color that’s not too light and not too dark, you have yourself a delicious bowl of noodles. The reason why this dish is so popular is because the rice noodles complements the soup so well. All the rich flavor from the soup is absorbed in the noodles as well as the raw beef brisket, which you’ll have to dip in your soup. Usually when I have this signature dish at other Vietnamese restaurants, the beef is usually flavorless due to a bland soup. But here, they do it very well.
Highly recommended!
Rating: 4/5
Of course there are so many dishes here to try since the menu seems to be absolutely endless, but definitely try their house special rice noodle soup, spring rolls, rice vermicelli

Better Burger

Better Burger
265 W 19th St
on 8th Ave
212 989-6688
After waiting for my bf to get off of work, I had a strong craving for burgers and fries. Luckily there was a burger joint that’s just a few blocks away, ’cause otherwise, I’ll have to settle for MaCDonalds, and I’ll be damned if I have to do so. Mind you, I’ve never heard anything about this place and just charged right in. =P
*I apologize for not taking a picture of the front of the fast food restaurant. There was a gigantic round orange sign in front with their logo on it, but I figure since it’s on their cups, it’s pretty much the same.
Upon entering the restaurant and staring up at the menu above the cashier counter, my eyes widened when I saw the price of their cheapest burgers -$5.95,1/3 lb meat for their classic burger. Yeah $6 for a Burger? Man it sure as hell better be the biggest and best dam burger ever. At Micky’s, I can get 6 burgers for that price! Then I ordered an order of small “air baked” fries for $2.95. Oh man, it’s either the whole neighborhood or rich, or this place is dam pricey, or I’m just cheap. Whichever the case was, I wanted to try it regardless.
So I later learn from reading the rest of the menu that the reason why their burgers cost so damn much is because they’re organic. Organic? Whaa? This means their meat doesn’t have any antibiotics, injected hormones, steroids, drugs, or any other chemicals that might induce the size of the bovine. Plus they say it’s actually 100% meat, since they claim that most burgers have fillers. Ok. And with their fries, it’s air baked, so it’s not fried up in a gallon of oil that makes it fatty. Sound very wholesome and healthy! But anyways, the burger is pretty good. The meat was very moist and clean. It needed some ketchup in there, but otherwise, it wasn’t bad. I actually liked it because I didn’t feel guilty eating it. It left my mouth with a grease-less taste. Yay!

What’s great about this place is that they give you a whole bunch of sauces for your fries. I believe they have honey mustard, dijon mustard, chili, ketchup, and something else. I picked the honey mustard because it’s just simply irresistible. I can tell you this much, organic fries can’t ever beat the crunchy goodness of the deep fries version. Don’t get me wrong, this is still very good, but it was a little sweet for my taste. The thing that I liked about this is that there’s a lot of potato in there. Sometimes I forget that I’m eating fries, but really, it has that awesome potato kick that I miss with deep frying fries.
I would definitely recommend this place when you see one. I heard that they make kick ass smoothies too! I can’t wait to try it next time.

Corner 28: Peking Duck on Flushing

Corner 28
40-28 Main St
(Corner of Main St and 40th Rd)
(718) 886-6628

In this Chinatown off in Flushing, Queens, there’s a little hidden treasure on Main Street, across from the Caldor as you can see on the reflection in the above picture. Here on this corner of 40th road and Main Street are two windows that sell ice cream, and other for peking duck. Yeah you say Peking Duck, what’s so freakin’ special about that? Hold your judgement until I tell you this: THEY SELL IT IN PIECES. That’s right, they sell it in pieces.
I just rather find it quite fascinating that you can buy Peking Duck in pieces. Why you ask? Because most of the I can’t finish a whole peking duck or that I don’t have the funds for it. Peking Duck is definitely not as cheap as regular duck, and it can cost you up to $26 for a whole one, while a regular one is about $18. Huge difference.
As my bf and I approach the nice lady at the window for some duck, we realized that she spoke only of Mando. So folks, you better brush up on your mando, especially the numbers, because this woman does not understand cantonese or english. Here, my bf is telling this woman 10 pieces, “sup gor,” that we wanted. This lady thought we wanted 4 pieces. So here’s a picture of her setting up our 4 pieces:
When she was done, we were like, that sure as hell wasn’t 10. Then I told her, “su! su kway!” Then I held up my fingers and she held up her fingers and we got 10. Ahhh, so funny. Yeah I should be embarrassed, but I’m sure as hell not.
I apologize for the picture. This is the only picture I have of the Peking Duck because I was too hungry to take the picture when I got back to my bf’s place. But hey, I made this picture just a little bit bigger just for you.
Verdict:
*Let me tell you, if it’s cold by the time you bring it back home, heat the dam thing up. The duck becomes hard to chew because it gets hard and very thick.
And as far as the taste is concerned, the meat of the duck is very moist and succulent and the skin is nice and crispy. It compliments well with the garlic chives (cantonese: gow choy), Chinese barbecue sauce, and the bread. I can’t stop popping these little sandwiches in my mouth because it’s that good. Remember, if it’s not hot, it definitely isn’t as good.
Price: $0.75/piece, w/duck bone $2.00/piece.

Northern BBQ & Sushi Buffet

Northern [Korean] BBQ & Sushi Buffet
157-26 Northern Blvd
Flushing, NY 11354
(718) 886-8880
WARNING: THIS WILL BE THE MEATIEST EXPERIENCE YOU WILL EVER HAVE. VEGETARIANS/VEGANS BEWARE.
If you’re coming with a large party, especially on a Saturday night, be sure to make reservations! My party of 10 had to wait about 45mins before being seated. The people in here are mostly Korean, in fact you’ll be greeted by the staff in the Korean language. They’re really friendly and cute!

The atmosphere in the restaurant is very relaxing despite having a buffet environment. It’s definitely better when you bring a crew of your friends to dine out.
I really love the environment here. When you are seated, feel free to get up and get some food. I started off grabbing some hot food and sushi:
There’s my cali rolls, my potato croquet (god i love it), fried rice, chicken wings, and stir fried string beans. Yum.
Now, grab a plate full of meat to grill on your table. That’s right, it’s a BBQ and you do it yourself. It’s just the best way to do it.
Ask the server to start up the grill for you, otherwise you’ll play with the gas knob all night and wondering how the hell does it work. When you first work the grill, please drizzle some oil on it. It makes the cooking process faster. I’m sure you all know, but just a reminder especially if you’re a newbie like me. Usually the server do it for me, but here, you actually do it yourself. And seldom a server will come by if s/he isn’t busy and do it for you too.
The beef brisket, shown above, could be marinated a little more. What I highly recommend are the ribs. OH MY GOSH, it’s the juiciest, tastiest, most succulent piece of meat I ever had. Let me show you:

It just so so good! Use the scissors that they provide you to cut up the meat. Cut it after when it’s done cooking. This is the best piece of meat I had all night and I loved it!! There are other meats like steak, sausage, pork, intestines (ew, but still cool), etc etc, but this by far was the best I have had for the night. It’s all you can eat buffet, so try everything!
Sometimes when you finish a plate, the server might not see that your plate needs to be changed so call them over and they’ll gladly do it for you. =)
My only gripe about this place was that they had a poor dessert and fruit section. For the fruit section they only had grapes and cherries and ran out of cantaloupe and honeydew. For dessert they have jello, I think that was it and it wasn’t even that great.
I highly recommend this place!

My parents love to come here when they want good inexpensive Chinese food. I grew up eating the food here before they became a restaurant. Back then, it was a very small take out restaurant that made all sorts of tasty dishes. Now it’s a big restaurant that looks pretty nice. The same owners are still here and I can see that they worked very hard to where are they are now.
I used to come here for the noodles for their kick ass elbow macaroni in soup, rice noodles with beef, and green peas and minced meat over rice. Kick ass. Today I come here with my family to see if the food still taste as good.
I have to admit, despite that it changed and it became a restaurant, the place is still pretty dirty, especially the bathrooms. Oh, please don’t go to the bathroom because it’s soooo dirty. yuck! I was so traumatized. Let’s just say, stick to the upstairs bathroom. The table might be sticky, so be warned. If you can overlook that, you’ll have a good eating experience.

My bf and I are crazy in love with beef jerky. But unfortunately, we’ve never had fresh ones before because we always get the packaged ones from the store. But my god, when you step foot inside the shop you’ll see all the jerky goodness inside! Mm!! Too bad I didn’t get a picture inside because I was so overwhelmed by its strong spicy and sweet aroma. Anyways, we decided to get the 1/4 of the spicy beef and pork jerky to go since you can’t really sit and eat there.
Even after a long trip back home in brooklyn, the jerkies are still warm!! Yess. Anyways, this is the spicy pork jerky and it’s my first time having pork jerky. This jerky is very soft since it’s fresh, and it made it easy to eat. See even though it’s spicy, I honestly didn’t think it would be that spicy because it looks pretty sweet! But goodness, it was incredibly spicy! When my father took a bite of this, he was running to the kitchen for water because it was that fiery! Even though it burns, it was a very good pork jerky and it tastes a little sweet and it’s very spicy and tender as well!

This is the spicy beef jerky. Wow, this is the best beef jerky I have ever heard. This isn’t as overwhelmingly spicy as the pork, which is perfect for me. It’s warm, very sweet (probably they added a honey glaze) and subtly salted. I love it. You have to definitely try it for yourself!!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

This isn’t a restaurant so I couldn’t find the health inspection results. But don’t worry, there’s a lot of people working in there so I’m sure they keep it in tip top shape! =)
